Dear DL,
I just graduated from my senior year of college and am dating a senior, who's still in high school. And yes, she is 18, and yes, her parents do know and approve of me. I get a lot of crap when people find out my girlfriend's age. She doesn't look 18 and sure as hell doesn't act like it. I landed my dream job before completeing college, and let's just say my pockets are overflowing from my income. My girl makes me feel more like her sugar daddy. The only place she seems to ever want to go, is into jewelry stores or any high end purse store. I've spent over three grand on her within the two months we've been together. She's initiated and influenced every purchase except for one gift. I gave her my dead grandmother's pendant. It was something that meant a lot to me, and I gave it to my girl since I felt she meant a lot to me. She thanked me for it, but her freaking face was of pure disguest when I gave it to her. About two weeks latter, she told me she couldn't find it. I'm still pissed off about the whole situation. Afterwards, she got upset because I wouldn't buy her this diamond bracelet she wanted. She says she loves me, and gives me lot's of affection, but gets upset easy if she doesn't get what she wants. My family keeps telling me she's a gold digger? What the heck do I do?
Thanks for writing in. It's true what they say, age ain't nothing but a number. The only problem with that is when your 18 year old girlfriend is acting like a spoiled brat. I'm not judging, I'm glad you found an attractive young lady. However, if she valued your relationship she would not have lost something so precious like your deceased grandmother's pendant. It sounds like your ready to commit, while she's just waiting for her next gift. Looks aren't everything in life, espeacially if it's costing you a large dollar amount. Gold digger's are like leach's. They latch on and suck you dry until you have nothing left to give. Then they move onto there next victim. Here are some warning signs to know if your girl is a gold digger.
1. SHE FEELS ENTITLED TO THE GOOD LIFE
She doesn't seem to have long term goals and just craves 'status.' A gold digger walks around feeling entitled to the good life without feeling any need to lift a finger to achieve it.
2. SHE'S OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE
Your ego is boosted with your hot girlfriend on your arm. It's great to land such a beautiful girl, but keep in mind that could be a bad thing. Don't take offense, but if she's much better looking than you are, you have to wonder what she's hoping to gain out of the relationship. Especially if you have a fat wallet.
3. SHE HAS A LONG LIST OF EX-BOYFRIENDS
Gold diggers use their biyfriends as stepping stones to climb to the top of wealth. In fact, looking back on your girlfriend's past relationship you'll start to notice a pattern. You're likely to find that each guy she's dated has been more wealthier than the last. Your her promotion!
4. SHE USE'S HER LOOKS TO GET WHAT SHE WANTS
She tends to pop open a button or two on her cleavage to get to the front of lines, or get into night clubs for free. Her clothes get tighter and tighter everytime she wants to get her way.
5. SHE HATES OTHER WOMEN
She's always dressed to impress, sexy and gorgeous, flaunting all she has. She emphasis on her looks, and is wary of other women that are beautiful like her. She views them as competition because she's insecure.
6. SHE NEVER PAYS
When the bill arrives at the table she acts like she doesn't see it. She always leaves it up to you to pay and doesn't even offer to pay for half the bill. A gold digger takes for granted that you're a gentlemen.
7. SHE'S ONLY INTERESTED IN YOUR FINANCIAL STATS
She loves hearing about your career and finacial status. Do not mistake her curiosity for an interest in your life. The only thing she's interested in is the size of your wallet.
8. GOLD DIGGER FRIENDS
You can tell a lot about someone with the company they keep. If her friends show signs of being a gold digger, chances are she can be influenced by their behavior.
On a final note, know yourself worth. You're worth more than a paycheck. A pretty face doesn't always mean a beautiful heart. If your girlfriend doesn't value who you are and only cares about what you have and what you can give her, then it's time to get a new girlfriend.
